Review for Exam #2
Exam #2 will cover content in chapters 4, 5, and 14. Please
review the questions and slides for each chapter that are available on line. In
addition, there were several handouts associated with the content in these
chapters. The exam will consist of 20 multiple choice questions and short answer
questions. The following are specific questions for review:
- What is socialization?
- Distinguish between a functionalist and conflict
theoretical approach to socialization. Briefly explain how these two
theories are used to explain sport participation patterns and dropping out
of sport (see pp. 90-92).
- Briefly review the four phase process regarding sport
involvement that was examined by a study conducted by Donnelly and Young
(see pp.94-95).
- To demonstrate the effect of sport participation on
socialization review the example presented by sociologist Gary Fine. In his
three year study of Little League participation, what social characteristics
were reinforced (see p.107-108).
- What is the intention of large corporations such as
Coca-Cola and General Motors in sponsoring sporting events? How does
Gramsci’s ideas provide an explanation of what these companies are up to?
What is hegemony? (see pp. 112-113).
- As we observed in the video on youth sport and the
content in Chapter 5, what are the five ways that identify the trends of
youth sport programs (see pp.125-132).
- What are two negative consequences associated with the
privatization of organized youth sport programs (see p. 127).
- What is the sociological explanation for the increased
interest in alternative sports?
- When are children ready to play organized competitive
sports? In relation to readiness, what is “beehive soccer”.
- Identify at least three arguments for interscholastic
athletics; identify at least three arguments against interscholastic
athletics.
- What is the significance of sport in the student
culture of high schools? What does research tell us about the social status
criteria of sport?
- Briefly explain the findings of studies conducted by
Bissinger and Foley on how athletics in Texas reinforced the cultural mores
of the community (pp. 490-492).
- Provide a summary of graduation rates of college sub
groups (see pp. 498-500).
- Do college athletic programs make money? Briefly
elaborate (pp. 505-510).
- What has been the trend of boys and girls involvement
in interscholastic sports between 1971-2002? (see p. 512-513).
- The Knight Foundation has commissioned several reports
on the conduct of intercollegiate athletics. What are the four major
problems confronting college athletics? (see pp. 515-516).
- What was the purpose behind the legislation of Title

- What has been the effect of Title IX on athletic
