Introduction

Steely Library uses the Library of Congress (LC) method of organizing books. The examples below will help you understand how to follow LC call numbers.

The call number for each book is printed on a label affixed to the spine of the book. LC call numbers always begin with at least one letter. The books are arranged in alphabetical order by these letters.

All books with the same first letter are then arranged by alphabetizing by the second letter. Those without a second letter come first.

All books with the same first two letters are arranged by the first number following them. This means the entire number, not just a digit or a numeral. This number is a whole number between 1 to 9999.

When the numbers are also the same, the following letter is alphabetized next.

Where this letter is the same, the following number is used. The dot before the letter indicates that it is a decimal number. These numbers are arranged from small to large numerically.
