Text Box: General Background on the Mazamitla Project

General Background

Over the last four years, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center has enjoyed a partnership
with Mazamitla —a village of nearly 12,000 people.  Life in Mazamitla is hard. Most residents never
make it past third grade, and unemployment is so high that almost 80% of heads of household emigrate
to look for work in the United States.  Making computer technology available in Mazamitla would enable wives and children to communicate with husbands and fathers with whom they currently have very
limited contact.  This technology would also serve as a catalyst for educating residents and improving
their quality of life.
