I wish I were a quick thinker but would say after fifty some years if it hasn't come by now it won't! Have realized that many of our students do not possess "Relational thinking" in their mathematics! Reading Bob Wright's new book Developing Number Knowledge helped me discover that many of our students do not make the connection between many of the concepts they learn in math, i.e., skip counting related to multiplication, NWB/NWA is another way of saying 1 less/1 more, addition sign simply means moving up the number line whereas subtration moving down/back .......relating their answers and asking themselves if it makes sense to add 5 and 3 and having the answer of 2!! I have discovered working with my intervention kids each concept is isolated and has no relevance/connection with other concepts! Believe a presentation on "Relational thinking" would be eye opening for many teachers!
