Family Math/Movie Night

Postby jbingham on Thu Sep 06, 2012 11:18 am

We tried a new idea with our family math night. We had our math activities and "math information" stations set up. Students had to bring at least one adult in order to gain entrance to the math night event. As the student and adult rotated around the room to the different stations, they received a "participation stamp" on their math ticket. Once all math activities were over, students and adults attended a movie night on the lawn. In order to gain entrance to the movie night, students had to show their math ticket with the participation stamps on it. Families brought their lawnchairs and blankets and received all the free popcorn, candy, and soda/water their hearts desired. We also tied this night in with our annual Title I meeting. It was a very successful night with great math activities, great food and fellowship, and perfect weather. We had many compliments from our families who attended.

What a neat idea! We are just beginning to plan our event. It is going to be a math and reading fair. It is the Thursday before Halloween and children are being encouraged to dress up as their favorite book character. We are having several stations and give aways and a chili supper.

I LOVE the idea of incorporating movie night with Family Math night! I may try to use this next year. This year the reading intervention teacher is teaming up with me and we are both teaming up with the media center director for a book fair, and reading and math night with games, prizes, etc. Thanks for the great idea! :D
