Tom and synths in concert

Electronic Music

Tom began composing electronic music in 1971. In those early days, electronic reverberation and room simulation were difficult. So, Tom worked extensively in 4-channel surround sound, and also environmental installations to bring his sounds to life.

Atmospheres (1984) was created for dancers in paddle boats. The 360-degree sound system was floating on a stage in the middle of the river.

Fantasia Spatium (1973) is a 30-minute work for 4-channel surround sound and Pipe Organ.

The Gift (1978) was for an early public event that combined 4-channel surround sound with an array of light sculptures throughout the grounds of the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

Mobiles I (1974) was created as a live performance for 4-channel tape echos and an ARP 2500 analog synthesizer.

Hymn To The Sun (1976) was also created on classic, analog synthesizer machinery.
