Plagiarism Policies

Because of the constant spectre of plagiarism, most schools have adopted an official policy on plagiarism, including appropriate punishments as well as a codify standard for appeals if a person accused feels that they have been judged unfairly.  Many of these policies are available online for study.  Below are a few links to some policies that have been established across the country and around the world.

  •  University of Northern Colorado - UNCO has an entire section of their website devoted to their plagiarism policy, including their formal definition of it, how to identify it, and a page dedicated to related links.  It also includes contact information for the person who maintains the site.
  •  University of Illinois - The University of Illinois dedicates a rather lengthy page to a full write-up of their policy concerning plagiarism.  Be warned, this is fairly dry reading.
  •  Northern Kentucky University - The plagiarism policy of our own alma mater.  The only real difference here is that they insist on calling it an 'Honor Code' at our school.
  •  Capilano College - This is a Canadian college included their plagiarism policy in their rules concerning cheating in general.  They lay out the exact procedure for dealing with the problem, as well as appeals information.
  •  University of Alabama - UA includes their policy on falsification of data with their plagiarism policy.  It's very much a no nonsense site with a clearly defined set of rules for the school.
