An identified sponsor defines advertising as any paid form of non-personal communication about an organization, product, service, or idea.

Did you know that the average person sees over 3,000 advertisements a day??

The non-personal component of means advertising involves mass media through:

    Television

    World Wide Web

    Newspaper

    Billboard

    Radio

    Word of Mouth

    Magazines etc.

Advertising is the best-known and most widely discussed form of promotion, probably because of its pervasiveness.  It is also a very important promotional tool, particularly for companies whose products and services are targeted at mass consumer markets.  Check out the list below for useful sites providing current advertising knowledge:

There are several reasons why advertising is such an important part of many marketer's promotional mixes:
It can be a very cost-effective method for communicating with large audiences.

It can be used to create brand images and symbolic appeals for a company or a brand, a very important capability for companies selling products and services that are difficult to differentiate on functional attributes.

It  has the ability to strike a responsive chord with consumers when differentiation across other elements of the marketing mix is difficult to achieve.

There are also several criticisms of advertising:
    Deception/untruthfulness

    Effect on children

    Offensiveness/bad taste

    Social/cultural impact
