History

Since the beginning of human history, technology has had an impact on how and what we communicate.  From the development of the first written forms of communication, to the printing press, to the photocopier, to Napster, technology has changed the way we define the relationship between the speaker and that which is spoken, between the creator and the creation.

In legalese, this relationship is called "intellectual property."
Under modern law, you have a right of ownership to original ideas, creative works, and inventions.  However, the rapid advance of computer technology, particularly the Internet, is challenging traditional views of intellectual property.
