Eating Disorders
Three major eating disorders affect people
in the world. These disorders are Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa,
and Binge Eating Disorder. People who are affected by these
disorders
are so obsessed with food and their weight that it affects the person's
health, relationships, and daily activities. According to the
National
Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders:
Anorexia
Nervosa
is a disease in which a person is hungry, but denies the hunger because
of an irrational fear of becoming fat.
This disease is characterized by:

Deliberate self-starvation with weight
loss
-
Food preoccupation and rituals
-
Compulsive exercising
-
Often an absence of menstrual
cycles
-
Excessive facial/body hair because of
inadequate
protein in the diet
-
Sensitive to cold
-
Hair loss
Bulimia
Nervosa
is characterized by recurring periods of binge eating, during which large
amounts of food are comsmed in a short period of time.
This disease is characterized by:

Aware that eating is out of
control
-
Self-induced vomiting
-
Abuse of laxatives and/or
diuretics
-
periods of fasting
-
Weight is slightly above or near weight
range
-
Broken blood vessels in the eyes
-
Swollen salivary glands
Binge Eating Disorder
is
characterized by compulsive overeating.
An individual with this disorder:
-
eats but does not purge and becomes
overweight
-
eats three meals a day plus several
snacks
-
continual eating instead of large amounts
of food during binge
Treatment can save the life of someone
