  • Anthropology 100 - Cultural Anthropology Fall 2007 - This course introduces students to cultural anthropology; a sub-field of the academic discipline of anthropology that takes as its subject the study of human beliefs and behavior, in all societies, worldwide. Students learn about anthropological fieldwork methods and the theory used to interpret them by reading ethnographies and scholarly research papers. Coverage of this class includes, but is not limited to, the following: 1) the history of cultural anthropology, 2) the concept of culture; 3) the impact of language on culture and thought; 4) economic, social, political and kinship systems; and 5) the cultural constructions of identity, race, gender, religion and art. This course concludes by examining how colonialism and globalization has affected indigenous peoples in the past and what the future may hold for cultural diversity.

  • Language and Culture (Anthropology 275) Fall 2007 - This course introduces students to linguistic anthropology; a sub-field of the academic discipline of anthropology that takes as its subject the study of human beliefs and behavior, in all societies, worldwide. Students learn linguistic anthropological methods and theory by reading ethnographies and scholarly research papers. Coverage of this class includes, but is not limited to, the following: 1) communication and speech, 2) language origin, evolution and variation; 3) comparative and historical linguists; 4) language structure (phonetics, phonology, syntax and grammar); 5) sociolinguistics and language politics; and 6) language and cognition.
    • Developed Blackboard course site, which includes syllabus, reading, multimedia and grading material. Led the students in independent ethnographic research.
