Honors' best friend

Indy holds the prestigious Gus Zaniello Memorial Chair For Honors House Goodwill Ambassador.

And yes, she is a dog.

She helps make students feel at home and relaxed, and sometimes she helps them through the rough patches of college. She also takes very good care of the floor in the basement of the Honors House by making sure it is free of all scraps and crumbs.

Indy’s life has not always been this happy. She lived for a time in western Indiana. No one knows how long she was there or with whom she lived, but she was taken to a shelter in Vincennes, Ind. She spent several months there (with the ridiculous name of Delilah) and a new manager there decided her time was up. She was literally hours away from crossing the rainbow bridge when her new mom and dad saved her with the help of the Northern Lights Sled Dog rescue group in May 2004.

Indy is an incredibly friendly and sweet dog. She has never hurt anyone or anything. She lives with cats, she took care of her “sister” rabbit (thinking her to be a puppy) and she simply adores children. She will, however, steal that peanut butter sandwich right out of your backpack and try to beg treats from you whenever you are having a snack in the Honors House lounge. (You can take the dog off the street, but you can't take all of the street out of the dog, you know?).

If you see Indy, pet her head - but please don’t feed her, she’s on a diet. She loves to walk with her dad in the Honors House yard and along the woods trail, but please make sure that she stays in the Honors House if David Kime isn’t with her. If you do see her out without David, please bring her back inside.

Indy will take all of the loving you can give her. In fact, if she “talks” to you in a little, low growl, that’s her way of asking you to keep scratching and petting! She’s become very spoiled in that way since her knee surgery in 2007.

She knows when you are feeling down and will try to comfort you. One day she found a student who had been having a really bad day. Indy sat down next to her and spent the next half hour giving and taking hugs and kisses and letting the student cry on her shoulder. Despite other distractions, Indy didn’t leave that student’s side until the student needed to leave for her next class.

In her life as the Honors House Dog, Indy has enjoyed taking trips to all sorts of interesting places from the mountains to the sea. But her two favorite places are her home and the Honors House, and nothing makes her happier than hearing her dad ask “Indy, do you want to go to work?”

And remember, come down and pet her whenever you get the chance, when you are just feeling like you need some support!
