Ali Raisor Godel

Ali Raisor Godel teaches Honors seminars that highlight the people, places, ideas, images and activities that make us who we are, forming our individual and collective identities and underscoring our roles in the world as social beings. Topics have included volunteerism, performance studies, commemoration, freedom, rock documentary, gender-based communication, theme parks and Cincinnati. In addition to these courses, Ali also teaches general education courses in the College of Informatics, Department of Communication.

She earned her M.A. in Communication and Culture from Indiana University in 2004, where she focused on the intersections of life where speech communities arise. Her major research focused on two American co-cultures: Latinos and DeadHeads. Most notably, this work uncovered her passion for commemoration -- coming together to combine past, present and future, hoping to achieve that "magic moment" when the boundaries of time and space slip away and we can gain empathy and understanding through remembering.

Ali is a veteran of NKU and the Honors Program. She earned a graduate certificate in Nonprofit Management from NKU in 2006 and a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies in 2002. In addition, she graduated as a University Honors Scholar and is the recipient of one of the University’s top awards, the NKU Regents Award.

Ali reflects, "NKU’s Honors Program made a difference in my life, and now my goal is to make a difference in the lives of my students in Honors."

She has always been dedicated to serving her community in meaningful ways. Today, she says, "I encourage my students to become informed, engaged citizens who work for social justice and positive change."

Ali is committed to service-learning and has served as a faculty advisor to the student groups Honors House Volunteer Corps and the newly instituted American Democracy Project.

In her spare time, Ali enjoys spending time with her wonderful husband and daughter, traveling far and wide to create new -- and often musical -- adventures with them.
