clean up

well, i finally found some time to drop by the garden. it had been a full month. every year, i seem to miss most of our tomato harvest, as i usually go to california in august to visit my family. then school starts. i'm usually very wrapped up in the beginning of the semester adjustments.

so, it looks like our tomatoes really got knocked over by a fungal Wilt. Which one, i'm not sure. it completely killed the red pear tomatoes. Most of the other tomatoes are hanging on for dear life. But a few plants are resisiting the diseases and even putting up a late season growth. And those plants are our potato-leafed Brandywines! So, besides being argubaly the most flavorful tomato, its also this year's winner for being a Survivor. Even though the tomato dogma says that hybrids haver better resistance to disease-- our non-scientific anecdotal evidence shows that one of our heirlooms has really good resistance. Last year, I believe we had similar results with brandywines, but i do remember our yellow pears and principe borghese tomatoes getting consumed by the wilt before we could harvest much from them.

Our cucumbers, melons, and pumpkins also got killed by a Wilt. However, I think that wilt is bacterial and is spread by the cucumber beetle.

Anyway, I weeded the zig zag bed as best as i could in the hour i was there.

I looked at some carrots. Totally ready to harvest. They are HUGE.
