coffee followup

according to a post on gardenweb, coffee grounds contain an average N-P-K of 4-1-3. Elsewhere on gardenweb, its claimed 1.5 - 0 - 0.1 .... so i imagine its value ranges somewhere in there. but-- it adds organic bulk, its free for us, and it smells better than manure!

coffee grounds

earlier this week i visited a well known chain coffee house and got about 15 pounds of used coffee grounds. Half of it went into my grandma's garden. The other half just got put into the zig zag bed. two more bags of coffee grounds that size will do us just fine for the season.

i weeded our Sq Ft beds some.

while weeding, i noticed virtually everything is up-- and i noticed some poor germination for some of the squares -- super snappy peas, brittle wax beans, lettuce... time to reseed everything that didn't sprout i suppose. i noticed 4 full squares that are lacking in vegetation in the zig zag bed-- we could plant cilantro and basil there. or flowers. or the extra roma tomatoes.

i also thought maybe aaron & i could split up the weeding responiblities -- I could take the zig zag, could he take the squares? It would be pretty even.

the beds were also nice and damp, after several days of rain.

sprouts galore

We planted all of our seeds on Wednesday. Now, five days later, we've got quite a few sprouts. In the upper right box, most of our radish is up, and we've got a good number of beet sprouts and a few lettuce. In the zig zag, the cucumber seeds have all sprouted, and we have a few melon and one pumpkin. (After they get their second leaves, are we going to thin down to one plant each--or two for the cucumber?) In the bean/pea section, the Shaker beans have outstripped all the others, with most of them sprouted, followed by the Kentucky Wonders, where we have a few up. All of the transplants look healthy, though one of the tomato varieties (I forget which one now--the really tall ones) look a little yellow.

Today I'll water everything with the hose, and I'm weeding out the flower patch where the "painted daisies" are (I think they're actually a blanket flower varietal, but we've gotten used to calling them that). Those seedlings are the furthest along, so I'll try to have the plot ready for the new transplants by the end of the week.

useful software

this is a useful software tool if you want to know how many calories, carbs, or vitamin c a given food has... or even obscure nutrients like tryptophan or 22:1 undifferentiated fatty acids.

Brought to you by the USDA (a US Federal Government website)

Did you know a whole canteloupe contains 212 mcg of Lutien? or a cup of pumpkin contains 1740 mcg of lutien?

I didn't.

Then again, i'm not sure what lutien is anyway.

...Really, all i care is that my food is DELICIOUS, And I get higher quality for less price (which I do in our garden).
