aaron and i weeded the strawberry patch. i had a good time talking with aaron today-- one of my favorite parts of gardening is our camraderie.

later in the evening, i planted the winter squash, zuchinni, watermelon, and cucumber-- all bush/compact/shortvine varieties. i should have thought a bit more about what veg and where as i had slightly more room in the rows closer to the house than i did to the rows newr the peas, and i planted the stuff that required more space in the area of less space-- so we have 3 spots for watermelon and zuchini, and 5 spots for cucumber and winter squash. had i reversed the postions, we might have gotten four plants of each.

I planted 3-4 seeds in each spot. i measured them out with the proper spacing recommended on the packets. for each space, i removed two shovels' full of soil, and filled the hole with a 50/50 mix of canadian peat and compost. i used only one bag of compost and perhaps a 1/4 bag of canadian peat (maybe less). When they are all germinated and have the first leaves, we can thin to one plant per spot.

the beans and peas that aaron re-seeded seem to be just barely sprouting today, they should be well-up in a week.

todays planting concluded out spring veg garden planting.

we can turn our attention back to the herb patches for weeding and annual planting, and eventually perrenial purchasing. and also return attention to the butterflygarden. we mentioned today something about moving the bright pink tiny flowered plant to fill in a small irregurlarly shaped area that contains no plants as of yet.

the winldflowers i have growing at my house under lights will certainly be ready next weekend. there is an increasing rate of true leaves on all the plants.

i wanted to plant caraway, because i like the flavor of the seeds in rye bread. i wondered why i don't find the seed anywere? i'm thinking, well, maybe its a tropical? no, turns out, its listed as a noxious weed in 35 states, the botanical name is Carum carvi. thus, its invasiveness why it's not for sale. apparently its related to carrots and looks much like queens anne lace (also i biennial in the carrot family).

i bought some for my spice shelf anyway.
