I stopped by sunday afternoon to turn over the soil and plant shallots and garlic. and thus i did. the onions seem to be coming back, so i figured to leave them alone, and just dig them up next summer. on the side closest to the woods, garlic is planted. on the side closest to the house, shallots are planted. the beds are marked with colored sticks, but the sticks still need to be labeled.
i dug two trenches about four feet wide and a six inches deep. i filled the trenches with compost, a gallon of coffee grounds, and organic fertilizer. then i turned the bottom of the trench over with the spading fork. i planted the cloves, and then i covered it with a light layer of dirt mixed with straw. and then i raked over the remaining soil.
i filled in a couple of holes left from old shrubs that got dug out with some of the trench dirt.
i mulched our herbs lightly with straw for the upcoming winter.
the compost bin is now empty, awaiting to be filled.
hopefully this experiment in autumn gardening will work. if it does, we will have a lot of shallots and garlic. i didnt count but i am going to guess i planted 30 of each.
