The Honors Curriculum

Currently, the curriculum of Northern’s Honors Program can be completed in almost as many ways as our program has students. There are some basics, however:

*Twenty-one Credit Hours Total (7 courses) over your entire degree.
 About one course every semester, but individual schedules vary.

*Five Honors Classes complete fifteen of the twenty-one total hours.
No more than two honors sections (six credit hours) of General Education courses (ENG 151H, CMST 101H, PSY 100H, to name a few) may count toward the twenty-one hour program.

*A two-semester, independent study (working one-on-one with a faculty mentor) capstone project completes the remaining six credit hours.
Credit for capstone projects may come from Honors or from the student’s major department, including independent research or project credit, and, with prior approval, co-op or internship or practicum credit from certain programs.

There are literally hundreds of combinations, and working with advisors in Honors and in the major departments, students from any major can complete the Honors Program. Here is one sample individual curricula:

  4. The Ancient Mid East (taken as part of KIIS Study Abroad program)

As you can see, the possibilities are limitless, but with thought and planning, the twenty-one hour Honors curriculum can easily fit with any existing NKU major—or even combination of majors!

*Very Important! Students completing the Honors Program must complete a “Program Certification Form” the semester before your intended graduation date (form is due at the Registrar’s Office on October 8, 2010, for students graduating May, 2011). Students must make an appointment with David Kime to complete the Program Certification Form.
