HIS 312 Federalist US, 1789-1828

This course enables each student to become familiar with the major themes of history in the period and how these themes influence current events and impact contemporary problems. Emphasis will be placed on individual lives in order to gain perspective on contemporary times. The course begins with the life and career of Alexander Hamilton and his role in establishing a strong national government with a sound financial system. Next is George Washington, who still stands as a model of integrity devoted to the Republic. The history of medicine in the period will be considered along with all forms of discrimination including ethnic, racial and gender discrimination. There will be three essay exams, and interactive class discussion will include three book reviews, videos, and contemporary documents for critical analysis. One of the documents discussed in class will be Dr. Ephraim McDowell's case report of the first surgery in history.
