Bachelor of Arts in History

To attain a Bachelor of Arts in History, students must complete 42 semester hours of course work in the subject with a grade of C or above in each class.

A student's grade-point average for all courses counted toward the major must be 2.5 or above to be considered for graduation.

History majors are also required to submit a senior portfolio of written work completed in history courses at NKU. The portfolio will be submitted in the final semester before graduation.

The course requirements for a history degree include:


Survey course sequences (12 hours) 

  • Either:
    • HIS 100 - History of Europe to 1713
    • HIS 101 - History of Europe since 1713
  • Or:
    • HIS 108 - World History to 1500
    • HIS 109 - World History since 1500
 - AND -
  • Either:
  • HIS 102 - History of the US to 1877
  • HIS 103 - History of the US since 1877
  • Or:
  • HIS 106 - History of Afro-Americans to 1877
  • HIS 107 - History of Afro-Americans since 1877
NOTE: Students who successfully complete HIS 194 Honors Seminar need to complete only two additional survey courses. But they must take an additional upper-division course to complete the requisite 42 semester hours for the major.

    Upper-division courses (30 hours):   

    • One upper-division course in United States history 
    • One upper-division course in European history
    • One upper-division course in non-western history
    • HIS 385 - Art and Method of History

    • Two upper-division courses in race and/or gender history
    • Three additional upper-division history courses in any field
    • One upper-division geography course
