Welcome to US History with Professor Bonnie Wheeler May

I am a native Kentuckian, and often proudly describe myself as a "Mountain Woman," from the hills of Eastern Kentucky. I hold a B.A. in Sociology, a Masters degree in Public Administration, a Bachelor’s degree in History, a Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies, and a Master’s degree in Education with a specialty in history. Before returning to college to obtain my Master’s in teaching, I held professional positions with the West Virginia and Kentucky State Departments of Health, and with private non-profit organizations, such as the March of Dimes and the American Red Cross. Therefore, I bring a varied background into my teaching. I also serve as the assistant advisor of the department’s history student honorary, Phi Alpha Theta, and as associate director of NKU’s military history lecture series.

I am married and have one son who is also a college student. We share our home with two great kitty cats that teach us humility on a daily basis. My hobbies include gardening, reading, and I collect cookbooks.

I currently teach freshmen courses in US History. Students, in both my US History 102 (US History to 1877) and US History 103 (US History 1877 to the Present) courses, will be asked to take on the roles of explorer, detective, student and scholar. Throughout these courses, I also help students define how the experiences of the past impact and define their lives today. Yes, history can be exciting!!
