Secondary Education/Social Studies

For students interested in teaching history at the secondary level, the discipline of history makes up the core of the social studies state certification process. All program admissions and certification requirements are handled by the ~School of Education. Requirements for the Area of Concentration in Social Studies/Secondary Education

I. 21 semester hours
European or U.S. History sequence (HIS 100-101; HIS 102-103) - 6 hours
HIS 385 The Art and Method of History - 3 hours
An upper level non-Western history course - 3 hours
An upper level Western (but not U.S.) history course - 3 hours
One additional upper level history course - 3 hours

II. 18 semester hours
Three credit hours in each of the following six areas:
Anthropology
ANT 100 Cultural Anthropology
ANT 102 Human Origins - 4 hours
ANT 110 Introduction to Archaeology
ANT 201 World Cultures
ANT 230 North American Indians

Economics
ECO 200 Principles of Macroeconomics
ECO 201 Principles of Microeconomics

Geography
GEO 100 Elements of Geography

Political Science
PSC 100 American Politics
PSC 102 Comparative Politics

Psychology (one course from A, B, or C)

Students must take six additional semester hours in each of three of the above areas; and at least three of these six additional semester hours must be upper level courses. If psychology is selected, one course must be taken from each of the two areas not chosen in II above. Only those areas in which a minimum of nine semester hours has been completed will be designated on the teaching certificate.

The total number of credit hours for the social studies concentration is 57 (58 if ANT 201 is included). A minimum of six credit hours of U.S. history is required for state certification. Students completing this area of concentration are encouraged to obtain in addition a major in history by taking two further 100 level courses (HIS 100-101; HIS 102-103; HIS 106-107) and three further upper level courses.

Students pursuing a social studies/secondary education curriculum should review that portion of the catalog relating to the School of Education. Upon deciding to pursue the teacher certification program, students must schedule an appointment with the coordinator of certification and advisement in the School of Education. Students completing the area in social studies are required to complete EDU 331 Teaching Social Studies in the Secondary Schools.
