Barbara J. Sween, Psy.D.— Director

Psy.D. -  Clinical Psychology, Minnesota School of Professional Psychology

M.S. - Counseling and College Student Development, Mankato State University

B.S. -  Psychology and Sociology, University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point

Dr. Sween has served as the Director of Health, Counseling and Prevention Services at NKU since 2001.  She began her career at the University of New Mexico and has enjoyed her return to the college setting and her contact with students.  Dr. Sween also has a private practice specializing in eating disorders.

Lisa A. Barresi, M.S.W., L.C.S.W. —                                                       Associate Director - Counseling Services

A.B.  -  Economics and Mathematics, Bowdoin College

 Lisa began working at Northern Kentucky University in January of 1995.  She began her career as the Assistant Dean of Students at Bowdoin College and has appreciated the opportunity to return to a university setting in her chosen profession.

Karen L. Bolte, M.S.W., C.S.W. — Counselor

M.S.W. - University of Kentucky

B.S.W. - Northern Kentucky University

 Karen began her career as a hospital social worker with an interest in mental health issues.  She eventually moved into community mental health services.  Karen has been a counselor at Northern Kentucky University since 2001.  Karen especially enjoys the opportunity to meet and work with the students at the university.

Gloria J. Oliver Carpenter, Ph.D.— Counselor

B.S. - Psychology, Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University, Tallahassee, FL

Dr. Carpenter joined the NKU Counseling staff in September 2007 after completing a post-doctoral fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.  She is eager to facilitate effective coping skills for anxiety and health-related issues.  In addition to clinical well-being, Dr. Carpenter also has research interests in health disparities and the health of minority populations.

Robert D. Wells, Ph.D.— Psychologist

B.A. - Psychology, Miami University

 Dr. Wells joined the NKU Counseling staff in August of 2001 with previous counseling experience at three university counseling centers. His goal is to help students expand and enhance awareness of themselves and their world, based on his belief that increased awareness leads to greater understanding of  the possibilities for living through the exercise of choice.

Mary Lynn Barber, LPCC, LICDC — Counselor

M.A.     Rehabilitation Counseling, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio

B.A.      Liberal Arts, Edgecliff College, Cincinnati Ohio

Mary Lynn joined the NKU Counseling staff in October 2007 after holding the position of Director of Counseling Services at the Alcoholism Council of the Cincinnati Area, N.C.A.D.D for the past 7 years. Mary Lynn brings a wealth of experience in counseling and AOD (Alcohol and Other Drug) treatment. She is eager to work with a university population as it offers her the opportunity to provide prevention and treatment services at an earlier point in the onset of substance abuse.

Michele Kay, R.N., B.S.N.  — Campus Nurse

 Michele began working at Northern Kentucky University in 1995.  She graduated from the Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in 1987 and received her Bachelor Science of Nursing in 1990.  She started her nursing career in Home Health Care and Industrial Nursing (working for CSX Railroad Corp.).  Her favorite part of working at NKU is interacting with students.  She enjoys the energy they bring to everything they do.

Kimberly McCafferty, R.N., B.S.N., M.S.N. — Campus Nurse

Kim began working at Northern Kentucky University in October of 2005.  She received her Bachelors and Masters of Nursing from San Diego State University.  She began her career working in acute pediatric care and joined the educational system in 2001.  Being able to educate students regarding their own health is what she likes best about working at Northern Kentucky University.

Robin Bading — Administrative Secretary  

Robin joined Health, Counseling and Prevention Services in October of 2005.  She has previously worked in medical transcription and as an office manager for a psychiatric practice.  As the mother of two sons quickly approaching college age, she enjoys helping NKU students with their transition to university life.
