Referral Process to Alcohol Education Program
Following a first infraction:
- University Housing staff, the Dean of Students Office, or the Student Affairs Office will contact Health, Counseling and Prevention Services to provide the Prevention Coordinator with the student's name, phone number and the name of the referring office (for reporting student compliance).
- The referring office will give the student an information sheet explaining the referral process, fees, class times, deadlines, and contact information.
- The student must register in person at the Health, Counseling and Prevention Office (UC 440) for the next scheduled AEP program.
- There is a fee for the class.
- The fees must be paid no later than the Friday before the class.
- Classes run from 2 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Any student arriving after 2 p.m. is required to reschedule for the next alcohol education session. Students will not be admitted into the classroom after 2 p.m.
- A compliance report and grade will be sent to the appropriate office upon completion of all requirements.
Following a second infraction:
-
The referring office will notify the Prevention Coordinator and the student will be instructed to arrange a counseling appointment. During the initial counseling session, the student will be given the SASSI (Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory), which provides a decision rule regarding the likelihood of a substance use disorder.
-
The results of the SASSI will be discussed with the student at a second counseling appointment. This information will allow the Prevention Coordinator to recommend and/or refer the student for substance abuse treatment through community resources to provide more comprehensive treatment tailored to addictive disorders.
-
Individuals who obtain a score on the SASSI indicating substance abuse problems versus a dependence disorder will be referred to a sixteen-hour course entitled Prime for Life.
