Alcohol Education Program [top] The Alcohol Education Program (AEP) at Northern Kentucky University is a mandatory, one-time intervention program designed to educate students about the facts, effects, and risks of abusing alcohol. This program was established to assist students who have been referred by University Housing, the Dean of Students Office, or the Student Life Office for first-time infractions related to alcohol use/abuse on campus and for violating the University's dry campus policy. Referrals can also be made from Campbell County Diversion Program and Dearborne Superior Court. The goal of AEP is help students discover, interpret, and apply the knowledge learned about alcohol use/abuse in order to adapt and improve upon their current functioning. AEP Fall Semester Calendar [top] Alcohol Education Prevention classes are not being offered this semester. Referral Process/Infractions [top] Following a first infraction, University Housing staff, the Dean of Students Office, or the Student Affairs Office will contact Health, Counseling and Prevention Services to provide the Prevention Coordinator with the student's name, phone number and the name of the referring office (for reporting student compliance). The referring office will give the student an information sheet explaining the referral process, fees, class times, deadlines, and contact information. The student must register in person at the Health, Counseling and Prevention Office (UC 300) for the next scheduled AEP program. There is a fee for the class. The fees must be paid no later than the Friday before the class. Classes run from 2 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Any student arriving after 2 p.m. is required to reschedule for the next alcohol education session. Students will not be admitted into the classroom after 2 p.m. A compliance report and grade will be sent to the appropriate office upon completion of all requirements. Following a second infraction, the referring office will notify the Prevention Coordinator and the student will be instructed to arrange a counseling appointment. During the initial counseling session, the student will be given the SASSI (Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory), which provides a decision rule regarding the likelihood of a substance use disorder. The results of the SASSI will be discussed with the student at a second counseling appointment. This information will allow the Prevention Coordinator to recommend and/or refer the student for substance abuse treatment through community resources to provide more comprehensive treatment tailored to addictive disorders. Individuals who obtain a score on the SASSI indicating substance abuse problems versus a dependence disorder will be referred to a sixteen-hour course entitled Prime for Life. The AEP Program is committed to collegiality and excellence. In order to support this core value, an ongoing evaluation of this program will occur after each session through distribution and completion of a Workshop Evaluation Form by each attending student. This evaluation will provide important information on clarity and usefulness of presented information and offer an opportunity for open expression of ideas and comments about the class session. Health, Counseling and Prevention Services will utilize this feedback as a means of improving upon the high standards already established for its program. Health, Counseling and Prevention Services will provide important information from this program to the Drug Free Campus Committee at Northern Kentucky University in compliance with the Drug Free Campus Act Biennial Review. Statistics will also be provided to Northkey Regional Prevention Center, a community agency that supports Prime for Life on campus. Adherence to rules of confidentiality regarding identifying information will be followed at all times. NKU Alcohol Policy Click here for Alcohol Policy. The first goal of the program is to help individuals reduce the risk for any type of alcohol or drug problem by using the Five Steps to Risk Reduction. The second goal focuses on self-assessment to help people who are making high-risk choices understand and accept the need to make changes, either in their lifestyles or in the choices they make, to avoid future problems. Prime For Life is based on objective research from many fields and is designed with respect for thousands of people who attend this program each year. It does not moralize or dictate. (The Prevention Institute, 1999). This program is available to NKU students through the efforts of Health, Counseling and Prevention Services and NorthKey Regional Prevention Center of Northern Kentucky. AEP WebLinks!
