MEDICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EMERGENCIES

University Procedure For Faculty and Staff In Emergency Situations

Call the Department of Public Safety if you need assistance for on-campus emergencies 859-572-7777.

 

For off-campus emergencies call 911.

     

MEDICAL EMERGENCIES

  1. If serious injury or illness occurs on campus (breathing problems , chest pain, serious bleeding, loss of consciousness, etc.) immediately call the Department of Public Safety at extension 7777. Give your name and the campus location of the victim, describe the nature and severity of the medical problem, and indicate if an ambulance is needed.

  2. In case of minor injury or illness, first-aid care is administered by the Campus Nurse in University Center Rm. 300.

  3. In case of serious injury or illness, after calling for help, properly trained personnel should quickly perform the following steps:

a.  Ask the victim, "Are you okay?" and "What is wrong?"

b.  Ask for permission to help.  (Permission is implied if victim is unconscious).

c.  Check breathing.

d.  Keep the victim still and comfortable. DO NOT MOVE THE VICTIM unless there is an immediate threat to life (i.e., fire, dangerous fumes).

e.  Control any serious bleeding by direct pressure on the wound (use Universal Precautions¹).

f.  Continue to assist and monitor the victim until help arrives.

g. Look for emergency medical I.D., question witness(es), and give all information to the paramedics, Campus Nurse and Public Safety officers.

h.  Drug cases will be handled as medical emergencies.
 

  1. When the Campus Nurse, Public Safety officer or EMT arrives and takes over care, follow their directions for the safety of all involved.

  2. It is recommended that every office have their employees trained in first-aid and CPR and have a first-aid kit available. First-aid & CPR training is
    available through the NKU Wellness office (X-5684) and the local American Red
    Cross (513) 792-4000. For information on items to include in a first-aid kit
    contact the Campus Nurse (X-5650.)

PSYCHOLOGICAL CRISIS OR DISTRESS

Psychological Crisis

A psychological crisis exists when an individual threatens harm to herself/himself or to others, manifested by extreme behaviors.

If a psychological crisis occurs on campus:

Immediately do what is necessary to keep yourself safe and then notify Public Safety at ext. 7777.  Provide your name and location for officers to respond to the situation. A public safety officer will then notify the Director of Health, Counseling and Prevention Services.

CAUTION: NEVER TRY TO HANDLE A SITUATION ON YOUR OWN THAT IS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS.
 

Psychological Distress

Should you become aware of someone whose capacity to cope has become overwhelmed to the point that they can no longer function effectively (experiencing uncontrollable crying, severe withdrawal, speaking in general terms of harming self), call Health, Counseling and Prevention Services at ext. 5650 during regular business hours (8:15am - 4:30pm).  After hours contact Public Safety at ext.7777 (who will then contact the Director of Health, Counseling and Prevention Services).

 Note: There are psychological consequences to each and every emergency.  Health, Counseling and Prevention staff are available assist in these situations.
