FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (Counseling Services)

  How much does it cost?

The services at the Counseling Office are free to NKU students.

How do I make an appointment?

Students can call 859-572-5650 or stop by UC 300 to schedule an appointment.  Office hours are 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

How does counseling work?

The "counseling relationship" is different from social and typical friendship relationships.  Rather than give specific advice, for example, as a trained professional, the counselor acts as a skilled listener, helping you to clarify your situation.  In this way you may be better able to understand yourself, your situation, and the facts that affect you.  Moreover, the counselor does not tell you what to do.  The counseling relationship often helps you to discover what you really want to do, helping you get a better understanding of yourself, and helping you to develop more effective coping skills.

What about confidentiality?

We recognize that it can be difficult or awkward to share personal feelings or sensitive issues with another person.  Every effort is made to ease this process by ensuring a confidential relationship between student and counselor.  Counseling records are independent of all other university records.  Information may be released to others only by prior written consent from the student.  Confidentiality of your personal counseling information is, however, subject to certain legal and ethical limitations.

What type of counseling does Counseling Services provide?

Individual counseling, couples counseling, group counseling, psychological testing, referrals to outside resources, consultations, and educational presentations.

Please note:  Health, Counseling and Prevention Services records are kept independent of all other University records.  Information may only be released with written consent of the patient.
