Doctoral Programs Admission Requirements

For admission into any graduate program or as a non-degree seeking graduate student, the university requires all applicants to submit university and program requirements.

University Requirements

  • A graduate studies application.
  • Official transcripts of ALL college level work

    An official transcript is a transcript submitted directly to the Office of Graduate programs by the college or university or a transcript submitted by the applicant in the original sealed envelop from the college or university.

    NKU alumni do not need to submit transcripts.

Doctor of Education Requirements

  • A letter of introduction (1000 words maximum) describing your educational and leadership background.
  • Master's Specialist degree in education or related field from regionally accredited institution with minimum GPA of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Five (5) or more years of educational leadership experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) letters of recommendation and completed recommendation form from 1) supervisor(s), 2) professional colleagues(s), 3) university faculty addressing disposition, leadership skills and experience as well as potential for success in doctoral studies.
  • Professional vita/resume.
  • Leadership situation essay (500 words) that answers questions listed on admissions page of main Ed.D. website.

GRE Requirement

Graduate GPA of 3.75 or higher

GRE requirement waived.

Graduate GPA of 3.5-3.74

Applicant may submit evidence of graduate level writing ability. If approved, GRE requirement will be waived.

Graduate GPA of 3.499 or lower

Applicant must have minimum combined GRE score of 1000 ( verbal and quantitative only) taken within at least five years of application date. 



Doctor of Nursing Practice Admission Requirements

    • Have a master’s degree in nursing from a nationally accredited school.
    • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale.
    • Have successfully completed an upper division level graduate course in statistics. within the last 6 years, equivalent to STA 614 at NKU with a “C” or better on a 4.0 scale.
    • Possess an unencumbered RN license in the United States or the country in which you practice.
    • Submit three satisfactory academic and professional recommendations with at least two of them by nurses (standard reference form provided).
    • Submit a copy of one’s resume or CV: educational background, employment history, awards, and accomplishments).
    • Send official transcripts post baccalaureate study.
    • Submit TOEFL scores as needed per university policy.
    • Submit a scholarly writing example, the paper should be written using APA 6th edition and submitted electronically to the DNP interviewers. For details on the contanet of the scholarly paper visit our web site.
