Building Your Career Network (Updated 09/19/2012 10:16 AM)

Although resumes can be a useful tool, the more important asset for scoring a career-building job is your personal network of professional contacts.  Why?  When looking for job candidates, recruiters are often prone to work their personal networks first prior to enduring the hassle often associated with a public hiring process.  You'll have an edge if you're linked into common networks with them.

For most students, building this network is a tough undertaking--often times because it's tough to know where to start.

The Haile/US Bank College of Business Career Connections day is a place to start.  This year's event will take place on Wednesday, September 26 from 3-6 pm in the Student Union Ballroom (business attire required).  Dozens of organizations will be there.  A great way to make job contacts and to strengthen your network.

I'll offer one point of extra credit for each business card (or equivalent evidence that you have met a contact) that you collect at the career fair (up to a max of three cards/points) applicable towards the next exam.  Write me a one page memo that provides basic when/where background, and then briefly describe the contacts you made and the extent to which you think they may be useful.  You can staple the business cards to the memo as proof of your contact.
