A2: Built to Last (Updated 01/30/2008 12:47 PM)

MGT 490

Note:  The following problem is fictitious but employs names of, and news from, real organizations.  The idea is to increase the reality of the situation, and to improve your awareness of various industries and organizations.

Previously you and the rest of the Midwest Beverage strategic planning committee conducted an industry analysis using Porter's (1980) five forces as the centerpiece.  With knowledge of the industry in its back pocket, the committee is turning towards strategy development.

You have suggested that some of the findings from Built to Last by Collins and Porras (1994) may be useful to the team.  You've volunteered to write a memo that outlines some of the book's key points.

Write a memo to the strategic planning committee that answers these questions that team member are sure to have:

  • What was the motivation behind the writing of this book?

  • What companies are considered/compared?  What were the selection criteria?

  • What was the research process that was used to collect the findings?

  • How do visionary companies differ from others in their industry.  (Some folks might refer to these differences as 'strategic success factors')

  • Reflect on some of the researcher's findings that you feel are counterintuitive (or contrary to 'common wisdom').

  • How can the strategic planning committee use findings from this book?

Remember to use appropriate format for citing your sources.
