Six Sigma Improvement Programs (Updated 08/08/2007 05:37 PM ) MGT 415 Note: The following problem is fictitious but employs names of, and news from, real organizations. The idea is to increase the reality of the situation, and to improve your awareness of various industries and organizations. You're an assistant production manager at Grote Industries, a Madison, Indiana-based manufacturer of auto and truck parts. Grote currently utilizes a structured approach to quality improvement based on the 10 step method that we've presented in class. Recently, you've been noticing a lot of articles about the concept of Six Sigma, pioneered by Motorola and now championed by General Electric. The vice president of operations has also heard a lot about Six Sigma, and has asked you to look into what Six Sigma-based improvement programs are about and how they compare to what Grote already does. Using plenty of outside resources (and citations), present the Six Sigma approach and compare it to the 10 step approach you currently use. Be sure to note costs and benefits of the Six Sigma program. Also consider potential challenges with implementing such a program. NOTE: When making comparisons, tables are your best friends. Do you think this program may be worthwhile for Grote? How to proceed?
