A3: Supplier Report Cards (Updated 08/18/2011 05:41 PM )

MGT 307

Note:  The following problem is fictitious but employs names of, and news from, real organizations.  The idea is to increase the reality of the situation, and to improve your awareness of various industries and organizations.

You are a project manager for Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG), a retail restaurant chain located in Denver.  CMG sources its food ingredients from a variety of regional and national vendors.  The director of purchasing is interested in developing an evaluation system for its vendors and you're a member of the design team.

At the last meeting you suggested that the team consider an evaluation method based on the 'report card' format utilized by many companies.  You offered to write a memo outlining a potential report card system and circulate it to the team before the next meeting.

Here are some issues to consider:

  • Propose at least 4 categories upon which food ingredients vendors could be evaluated, and at least two metrics that would adequately reflect performance of the category.

  • Develop a model report card with some hypothetical data for one of CMG's suppliers.

  • Outline a process for gathering the supplier evaluation data (consider using a flow chart).

  • What are some general issues that arise from administering a report card system that the team should be aware of.

  • Some suppliers may request that they get feedback on how they stand relative to their competitors (CMG's other suppliers of the same material).  How could the report format be designed to do this?  Show an example.

  • Any citations of supplier evaluation systems used by others would greatly add to your analysis.
