Process Choice

Identify the 5 generic types of operating processes. What are the basic dimensions upon which these process types vary? Know a product- and service-based example of each. Be able to place each process type on a graph of degree of output standardization versus production volume.

Be able to classify an operation as "towards job" or "towards flow."  Know factors that help classify job versus flow processes.

Explain why poor choice of operating process can be strategically costly. Give an example.

List the 3 approaches for mass customizing (i.e., produce both high volume and high variety) and provide an example of each.

Which operating process type (job or flow) tends to support a differentiation strategy?  A low cost strategy?  Why? (be specific)

NOTE: You will not be responsible for items in red on the exam.
