A5: DC Location (Updated 08/08/2007 05:34 PM)

MGT 305

Note:  The following problem is fictitious but employs names of, and news from, real organizations.  The idea is to increase the reality of the situation, and to improve your awareness of various industries and organizations.

You are an operations analyst for Milliken & Company.  Four contract manufacturers in Mexico produce fabric for Milliken.  Facilities in Mexico that produce goods primarily for export are called maquiladoras

You’ve been assigned to a project team for determining the best location for a distribution center (DC) for product from the four maquiladoras.  Use the information below to develop a possible solution.

Site Weekly Volume (in yards of fabric) Transportation Cost ($/yard per mile Location (miles east, miles north)
A 4500 5 (375, 345)
B 3800 9 (410,160)
C 9000 7 (95,400)
D 7000 4 (195,130)

Remember to explain what you're doing to your readers.  Don't assume they know anything about technical methods in location analysis.

Be sure to augment your quantitative analysis with research on maquiladoras and their stability.  Cite all sources.  Also, aim for credible sources that your readers will value.

Your main reader will be the Director of Mexican Operations.

Also, make sure you address “what could go wrong” with this analysis.
