In Search of Greatness (Updated 04/15/2009 11:25 AM )

Many people believe that greatness is an inherited trait--or something left to luck.  This Fortune article* bids to disagree.  Write me a 1 page memo that answers the following questions:

  1. According to the article, what is the key to excellent performance?
  2. What separates 'great' practice from other kinds of practice?
  3. According to the evidence, how long does it take to become great in a field?
  4. Has research determined what motivates individuals to undertake rigorous practice over many years?
  5. Based on this article, do you think greatness is in your control?  Explain.
