Reference Materials (Updated 02/25/2007 02:49 PM)

One problem with going 'textbook free' is that students may be in need of books for citations, help on problems, etc.  I have a few reference books that might be useful.  Dates on some of these are older but can still serve as perfectly good references for memos, problems, projects.

Let me know if you'd like to borrow one of these...

Operations Management

Stevenson (2007). Operations management (9th ed).  Formerly the 'required' text for MGT 305...a general OM text--3 copies.

Stevenson (2005). Operations management (8th ed).  Older version--2 copies.

Meredith (1992). The management of operations (4th ed).  General OM text...oldie but goodie.

Nahmias (2001). Production and operations analysis (4th ed).  Focuses on quantitative short term OM probs such as inventory, planning and scheduling.

Davis, Aquilano, Chase (1999). Fundamentals of operations management (3rd ed).  A general OM text that I haven't used but have it on my office shelf...

Chase, Aquilano, Jacobs (2001). Operations management for competitive advantage (9th ed).  Textbook of choice for many MBA OM classes although I haven't used it.

Womack, Jones & Roos (1990). The machine that changed the world.  The story of lean production (JIT) primarily as it originated via Toyota and other Japanese car makers.

Hays, Wheelwright, Clark (1988). Dynamic manufacturing.  Consummate reference on operations strategy with a bias towards manufacturing ops.

Hayes, Pisano, Upton, Wheelwright (2005). Pursuing the competitive edge.  I would seriously consider this book if I was teaching an elective on operations strategy.

Quality Management

Evans & Lindsay (2005). The management and control of quality (6th ed).  Formerly the required text for MGT 415.

Evans & Lindsay (1999). The management and control of quality (4th ed).  Older version.

Deming (1986). Out of the crisis.  Perhaps the most influential and widely cited quality management book ever written.

Deming (1993).  The new economics.  The 'sequel' to Out of the crisis written not too long before Deming died.

Juran (1988). Juran on leadership for quality.  My personal opinion is that this is the best 'how to' book on setting up a quality management program from a top management perspective.

Juran & Gryna (1988). Juran's quality control handbook (4th ed).  A thick, detailed quality control reference book.  Often referred to as 'the bible' by those studying for ASQ's Certified Quality Engineer exam.

Imai (1986). Kaizen: The key to Japan's competitive success.  A view of quality management from a Japanese 'guru.'

Ishikawa (1985). What is total quality control? The Japanese way.  Another Japanese quality guru speaks.

Wadsworth, Stephens, Godfrey (2002). Modern methods for quality control and improvement (2nd ed).  Deals primarily with quantitative quality control procedures.

Supply Chain Management

Banfield (1999). Harnessing value in the supply chain.  Focuses on purchasing and supplier management.

Dobler & Burt (1996). Purchasing and supply management: Text and cases (6th ed).  A popular text on supplier issues.

Monczka, Trent, Handfield (2002). Purchasing and supply chain management (2nd ed).  Another purchasing oriented textbook.

Leenders & Fearon (1997). Purchasing & supply management.  Perhaps the oldest purchasing text on the market.
