First-Year Programs

Northern Kentucky University freshman students have the opportunity to experience their first college year in an environment that promotes active learning, collaboration and personal development through these programs:

By collaborating with other academic and student development offices and community agencies, First-Year Programs offers these experiences to any freshman, regardless of their academic major or interests.

NEW! Living Learning Community/UNV 101 in the Dorms

WHAT IS UNV 101?

UNV 101: Orientation to College and Beyond is a graded, 3-hour, academic course that counts as an elective towards graduation requirements. This course will help you develop the critical thinking skills and other strategies to help you be successful in all your college coursework.  It is a small class that facilitates building close relationships with peers and faculty.

WHAT RESIDENTIAL OPTIONS ARE THERE WITH UNV 101?

The Norse Experience is a living learning community in the University Suites. All residents in a particular wing of the suites will be required to register for the same section of UNV 101. The combination of living together and enrolling in UNV 101 at the same time creates unique opportunities to engage in extended academic, social, cultural and service activities as a group. UNV 101 will meet in the University Suites classroom one evening a week from 6:15 to 9:00.

Woodcrest First-Year Community/UNV 101 is another option to enjoy class with your neighbors. Freshmen living in the Oak section of Woodcrest are eligible to sign up for a specific UNV 101 section. The class will meet in Norse Commons at a time convenient to residents.

HOW DO I JOIN ONE OF THESE EXCITING UNV 101 COMMUNITIES?

You must apply for housing by the May 1st deadline and indicate your preference for participating in one of these communities.

WHAT IF I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS?
