What are Learning Communities...
A Learning Community is a small group of NKU students who take two or three popular courses together. By taking the same classes, these students make new friends, form study groups, participate in class discussions and get to know faculty more quickly than they might otherwise in non-Learning Community classes. Research has shown that the more connections students make to the university, the better they do in school, the more they enjoy their college experience and the more likely they are to continue their college education after their first year.
Focused Learning Communities Are Also Offered...
Honors Learning Communities introduce students to the NKU Honors Program with a broad range of topics from which to select.
Major/Career Learning Communities assist students exploring particular majors and career fields.
Service Learning/Civic Engagement Learning Communities offer students opportunities to apply classroom learning to community experiences.
Learning Communities for Ethnic Students are designed to help new students from diverse poplulations make a successful transition to NKU.
Learning Communities for Developmental Students (RunningStart). RunningStart is a collection of Learning Communities for students with ACT scores under 18 in a combination of math, reading or writing. RunningStart provides students with a block of carefully scheduled classes with extra attention and support during their first college semester. Classes have only 20 students and tutoring is built into the schedule.
