Prospective Students
The NKU Academy is a five week program from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. consisting of two developmental classes (a combination of English, reading and mathematics) and one credit hour of UNV 101 - Orientation to College and Beyond. In addition, participants who live on campus during the Academy are housed with upper-division students who serve as peer mentors.
During the five weeks participants:
- Attend daily academic assistance sessions
- Have peer tutoring sessions
- Strengthen study and interpersonal skills
- Develop relationships with faculty and staff
- Meet with academic advisors
- Learn more about campus resources
- Participate in cultural enrichment activities (includes some optional evening activities)
- Meet new people
NKU Academy scholars who successfully complete their summer classes are eligible to continue as degree-seeking students in the fall semester as they continue receiving support to facilitate their success during their first year of college.
Fees
Commuter Option
There is a single, all inclusive fee of $1,132 for the NKU Academy which includes three classes, all academic assistance, peer mentoring, student development sessions and activities.
Residential Option
NKU Academy scholars who seek to live on campus will benefit from additional academic support in the evening hours as well as social activities with other NKU residential students. The fee for the Academy (as described above) with double occupancy in the University Suites residence hall is $1,569. This total DOES NOT include food costs. Scholars are encouraged to budget at least $250 to cover food expenses during the NKU Academy.
Books
Books are not included in the cost of the NKU Academy. Homework will be assigned the first day of class, therefore, it is imperative that scholars purchase their textbooks during orientation. Scholars will spend approximately $250 for their books.
Orientation
June 28 and 29
Scholars attending the NKU Academy will participate in Northern Exposure, a required two day orientation session, with their parents/guardians. This program is attended by all freshmen beginning the transition into college and will by familiarize scholars with NKU. Scholars will take a math placement test, receive their NKU Academy class schedule and register for their fall semester courses. The cost is $60 for scholars and $30 per parent/guest attending the program.
Financial assistance
Federal financial aid cannot be used to defray the cost of the NKU Academy BUT NKU has set aside limited funds to assist students with financial need to cover some of the cost of the NKU Academy.
Scholars interested in receiving financial assistance MUST complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) . Priority consideration will be given to those who complete the FAFSA no later than March 1. Scholars who successfully complete the Academy and are admitted to NKU for the 2010-2011 academic year are eligible to receive federal financial aid.
