This 12 hour graduate endorsement is based on the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) Guidelines for the Initial Preparation of Environmental Educators Standards. Teachers seeking the Fifth-Year, M.A. in Education, and the Rank 1 in elementary, middle grades, or secondary education may complete the environmental education endorsement. Other certified teachers and students in the MAT program are also eligible for this endorsement as an extended area of study.
Students must meet minimum requirements for admission to the selected graduate program as defined by the appropriate catalog and outlined on the program curriculum contract. Twelve (12) semester hours are required with advisor's prior approval and in accordance with the environmental education endorsements to meet the NAEE Guidelines for the Initial Preparation of Environmental Educators Standards. These courses can be taken as the Content/Specialization of the M.A. and Fifth-Year programs and the Professional Area of the Rank-1 program.
Course Descriptions:
EDG 644/BIO 644 - Aquatic Ecology for Teachers (Cross-listed courses), 3 credit hours:
The sciences of biology, geology, meteorology, chemistry, and physical sciences are integrated to teach about water quality through a field-based investigation of the Ohio River and streams. Students apply the content and skills learned during the course to the State/School District Science Standards and a classroom-based project. Curriculum and community resources related to water resources are emphasized. Required field trips.
EDG 645 - Fundamentals of Environmental Education, 3 credit hours:
A web-based course that provides an introduction to the field of environmental education, including the basic history and philosophy, methodologies, state initiatives, national standards, and current trends in the field.
EDU 546 - Teaching Environmental Education, 3 credit hours:
Principles and goals, curriculum models, teaching strategies, classroom and community resources, outdoor education, and research.
ENV 578 - Environmental Issues for Educators, 3 credit hours:
A laboratory, field and classroom course that provides information about local and global environmental issues and the application of these issues for classroom teachers and other educators. The topics covered in the classroom are reinforced with field trips that identify examples of global environmental issues in our local communities.
EDG 693 - Special Topics in Environmental Education, 1-3 credit hours: As approved by advisor.
Courses, often supported by grant-funded programs, that address national environmental education standards, KERA Initiatives, and EPSB themes that are comparable to the endorsement course option (EDG 644/BIO 644 and ENV 578).
BIO 694 - Special Topics in Biology, 1-3 credit hours: As approved by advisor.
