Midterm Exam Prompt

ENG 351, l9th-Century American Literature (Dickinson and James)

Fall 2001, Robert K. Wallace

Prompt:

Based on the works we have read so far, what qualities of life and art do Dickinson and James each most value?

Rules and Suggestions:

This is an open book exam (though you should not plan to rely on your books too heavily during the exam period).

You may bring one page of notes. You should try to give more or less equal time to each author.

Be sure support your generalizations with references (however brief they may have to be) to specific poems by Dickinson and passages, personages, or events in James.

In writing about James, you should make mention of both "Daisy Miller" and The Portrait of a Lady, even though you may emphasize one more than the other.

If a particular passage is central to your argument, be sure to locate it clearly in the text (either by referring to its place in the action or providing a page number from our text in parentheses).

In writing about Dickinson, be sure to refer to a variety of poems and not just one or two. You may refer to Dickinson poems by number if you wish, though in most cases identifying the poem by its first line will probably advance your argument more efficiently. If you identify a poem by its first line you do not have to provide its number as well.

Arrive in class with a game plan in mind, so that you can use your 75 minutes well.
