Scholarships

All of the following scholarships are applied for through the Office of Financial Assistance.  Please contact Financial Assistance for all questions.

JAN WALLING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP


Set up by Jack & Mary Walling in memory of their son.

Eligibility:  Must be a first-time freshman.  Preference will be given to a disabled applicant.

Priority consideration:
  1. Graduate of Highlands High School
  2. Resident of Ft. Thomas
  3. Resident of Campbell co.
  4. Resident of Northern Kentucky
Distribution of awards:  One award per year.
Amount: Varies
Renewable:  No, but previous recipient may reapply.
Selection:  
  1. Completed application must be submitted to the  Office of Financial Aid by deadline.    
  2. Letter of recommendation from the applicant’s High School counselor must accompany the completed application.     
  3. Applications will be reviewed by the Scholarship Selection Committee.       4.  Priority will be given to the current recipient providing a cumulative GPA of 2.5 is maintained.
Minimum hours of enrollment:  Full-time, 12 or more hours per semester.

ROY AND ELIZABETH DAWN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Set up by the son-in-law and daughter of Roy & Elizabeth Dawn.

Eligibility: 
  1. Graduation senior or graduate of Conner High School or Boone Co. High School.  
  2. Must satisfy the definition of Disabled as stated in the American with Disabilities Act. 
  3. Certified through KY. Bureau of Rehabilitation. 
  4. Application must contain a recommendation from High School Counselor stating that the student is academically disadvantaged.   
  5. Preference will be given to a disabled applicant.
Distribution of awards:  One award per year.
Amount: Varies
Duration:  One academic year, excluding summer session.         
Renewable:  No, but past recipients may apply.                               
Selection:
  1. Completed application must be submitted to the Office of Financial Aid by the designated deadline.
  2. A recommendation from the applicant’s High School counselor must accompany the completed application.
  3. Priority will be given to the current recipient provided a cumulative GPA of 2.5 is maintained.
  4. Applications will be reviewed by a committee consisting of representatives from the Office of Financial aid, Student Support Services, and Human Services Faculty.
Minimum Hours:  Full-time, 12 or more credit hours per semester.

THELMA LOUISE GREIN ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED


Through the generosity of her son Roger F. Grein.

Eligibility: 
  1. Must be admitted to NKU. 
  2. Must register with the Office of Disability Services and provide documentation of physical disability.   
  3. Must meet criteria for a physical disability as represented under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 & the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.  
  4. Must have an accumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. Distribution of awards:  Number of scholarships distributed will depend on the yearly earnings from the endowment.
Amount:  In-state tuition and/or housing and/or $250 per semester for books.
Duration:  One academic year, including summer session.
Selection:
  1. The application must be turned into the Office of Student Financial Assistance by February 1st.
  2. The application must include at least three letters of recommendation from education professionals.
  3. The application must include essay from applicant describing their educational aspirations.
  4. Applications will be reviewed by the Presidential Committee for Disability Services Scholarship Selection Committee.
Minimum hours:  6 or more credit hours/semester.

JOHN L. GRIFFIN/LIONS TIP-OFF SCHOLARSHIP


Set up by the men’s basketball coach to develop a competitive basketball tournament to open each season and to involve a local service organization.  This arrangement included the tournament proceeds going to a visually impaired NKU student.

Eligibility: 
  1. Full-time NKU student.
  2. Must be a Kentucky resident.
  3. Student must have a visual handicap and be involved with the NKU Student Support Services.  If there is no visually impaired student, other disabilities can be considered.
  4. Student must be in academic good standing.
Distribution of award:  One award per year.
Amount of award: Full in-state tuition (academic year) plus $300 for books.
Duration:  The ensuing two semesters from reception – Spring and Fall.
Renewable:  Only if designated by the Student Support personnel in the Fall preceding the tournament.
Selection:
  1. NKU Student Service personnel recommends the recipient.
  2. NKU Athletic Director and Head Men’s Basketball coach in conjunction with the LIONS and/or Griffin family will be involved, if needed.
Minimum hours:  12 unless in final semester before graduation.
Funding source:  The John L. Griffin/LIONS Club Basketball Tournament.

ELMER AND BLANCHE PIEPER ENDOWED FUND


In memory of Dr. Elmer J. Pieper and his wife, Blanche.

Eligibility:  Priority will be given to visually impaired students.  Or specific equipment to help facilitate academic inclusiveness for visually impaired students.

Distribution:  Annual distribution (beginning on fiscal year, which commences July 1st)

Funds will be administered by the Northern Kentucky University Foundation, Inc. through the Office of Student Financial Assistance.
