NKU Disability Services Mission Statement (4/18/06)
The NKU office of Disability Services (DS) is committed to providing learner-centered assistance and resources to students with disabilities in their transition to Northern Kentucky University. Our mission is to provide reasonable accommodations and a supportive environment where students with disabilities have access and opportunity to succeed in their pursuit of a higher education.
In addition, DS is available as a resource to faculty, staff and community agencies to provide education, consultation and guidance regarding disability issues. Our office is the main source of advocacy for students with disabilities in the development of the University’s policies, procedures, programs and curriculum.
GOALS
To
provide access to educational opportunity with services and advocacy which
integrate the students with disabilities into the University community.
To
provide reasonable academic accommodations based on review and evaluation of
documentation of disability presented by students.
To
certify individual disabilities for students of the University and maintain
confidentiality for the student.
To
counsel individual students regarding disability issues.
To
empower students toward self-advocacy.
To
help create a diverse student body.
To
assist in the recruitment of students with disabilities.
To
advise and refer students to appropriate resources.
To facilitate the appeals process as related to disability issues.
To secure accommodation services for students with specific needs.
To
provide exam proctoring for students with documented need for this service.
To
consult with faculty, staff, and students regarding disability issues.
To provide disability education and consultation to the University Community and outside agencies.
To act as liaison
to outside agencies and community groups.
To
support the University’s efforts to comply with section 504 of the
Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
