Definition:  a type of joint that is fixed or rigid.

Example: sutures of the skull.

Characteristics
 The bone ends forming the joint are connected by fibrous tissue.
  In sutures, the irregular edges of the bones interlock and are bound tightly together by fibrous connective tissue.
