RULES FOR THE CLASSROOM

ARRIVING LATE FOR CLASS: You are expected to make every effort to come to class and arrive before the start of the lecture. If you do arrive at the classroom after the lecture has begun, please enter the room through the back door as quietly as possible and sit in one of the closest available seats.

LEAVING EARLY FROM CLASS: If situations arise where you need to leave class early, please sit at one of the seats near the back door at the beginning of lecture. When you leave, please do so as quietly as possible.

CONVERSATIONS WITH FRIENDS: You are welcome to talk with friends before and after lecture, but not during the lecture. Personal conversations during class creates a disruptive learning environment for your fellow classmates who all paying a great deal in time and money to learn the material presented in this class. Courtesy is required. Students who disregard this rule will be asked to leave the classroom.

CELL PHONES AND PAGERS: Cell phones and pagers are not appropriate in the classroom. Please turn off all ringing cell phones and pagers before the beginning of lecture. If you have a "vibrator" option on your cell phone or pager, it is OK to leave it on, but plan on answering any call after class is over. I am mainly concerned with the disruption of class caused by the sound of a phone or pager ringing and/or of people answering calls. For absolute emergency, you can be reached through the Department of Biological Sciences main office [572-5307]. The secretary can send someone to the classroom to get you, if an emergency arises.

AUDIO-TAPING LECTURES: Many people find that taping the lectures helps them in reviewing the information presented in this class. You are welcome to tape-record my lectures. I would suggest that you sit near the front of class to get the best recording. I would also suggest that you use a battery operated recorder, as electrical outlets are very limited in number in this lecture room. This is something that you will need to do at your seat, as I will not tape lectures for you (if you are not in class) nor will I stop my lecture to turn over tapes that are left on my desk.

MISSING LECTURES: If situations arise during the semester and you are unable to attend a lecture, you do not need to call me to explain your absence (unless major problems, such as illness or accident, arise that will cause you to miss multiple lectures). You are responsible for getting the information presented in a missed lecture from your fellow classmates. I will not provide copies of my lecture notes to students who miss class.

MISSING LABORATORY CLASSES: Attendance is required for the laboratory portion of this class. A failing grade for the entire four hours of Bio 120 will be given to any student who misses more than three laboratory sessions during the semester. Your laboratory instructor can provide additional information about this course policy.
