Northern Kentucky State College began operations in 1970, and later became Northern Kentucky University. Kent was one of the five founding  administrators. He was the University's first Director of Admissions and Registrar, and later became the first Associate Provost.

Kent had the privilege of serving as the team leader for the creation of the Master of Science in Technology degree, and the Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership.  This degree is the first on-line baccalaureate completion degree in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. This program was developed in conjunction with the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. Students successfully completing the program receive a B.A. in Organizational Leadership.

In the academic year 2000-2001, he was appointed Visiting Fellow at Hatfield College, the University of Durham in England. The collegiate universities in England consist of Durham, Cambridge, and Oxford. His research focused on analyzing the collegiate tutorial system.
