Guiding Principles for Professional Ethics and Responsibilities

This document, adopted by the Faculty of the College of Business on April 1, 2005 specifies a set of guiding principles to be followed in our interaction with students, colleagues and staff within the college and university, and other external constituencies. As faculty,
  • We understand that our first and foremost obligation is to be effective teachers and scholars. We strongly encourage the free pursuit of learning.
  • We accept the obligation to meet classes on time as schedules, to provide a syllabus in accordance with College policies, to discuss materials that are relevant to the course, to conduct examinations as required, to be available to advise, counsel and assist students, and to evaluate student work in a timely manner using only criteria that are relevant to course performance.
  • We realize that we are in a position of authority in interacting with students. Therefore, we refrain from coercing the judgment or conscience of any student or causing harm to any student. We maintain professionalism in all teacher-student relationships.
  • We recognize that faculty members may disagree on matters of substance. However, we respect diverse points of view, debate differences and conduct constructive dialog in a courteous manner.
  • We are committed to the highest ethical standards in our pursuit of scholarly research. We abide by all University requirements in conducting research, including Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes as stipulated in the Faculty Handbook.
  • We do not exploit any position of power with our colleagues.
  • We understand that we may interact with people promoting business relationships with NKU. We do not personally accept substantive "gifts" or act in a manner that could appear to influence our decision making.
  • We recognize that our availability to students and colleagues contributes to a vibrant campus life. Therefore we abide by the University guidelines on outside professional consulting and holding regular office hours. We also actively participate in College and Department sponsored events.
  • We are committed to assisting the University in meeting its public service mission. In this role, faculty might be called upon by the community to render professional opinions in areas of expertise. In communicating with external constituents, we will refrain from misrepresenting our personal opinions as those of the University.
