Chemistry Students Shine at Annual Kentucky Academy
of Science Meeting
This year’s Kentucky
Academy of Science Meeting was held in Bowling Green, KY from November
6-8. According to organizers this meeting had the largest participation
of undergraduates from around the state in the 89 year history of
the event. Northern Kentucky University was prominent in its involvement.
Students from several departments showed off their research accomplishments
in either oral or poster presentations.
The NKU Department of Chemistry was on hand with one oral presentation
and three posters. Amber Shiveley, who is working with Dr. Niewahner,
gave a spirited talk entitled, “Synthesis of Catalysts for
the Activation of Small Molecules”. Isreal
Hensley, a senior working with Dr. McGill, presented his work
with Eli Lancaster in a poster on “Magnesium Depletion: Effects
on Mouse Brain Serotonin Levels”. Two posters were presented
by Dr. Russell’s research students. Annie
Vollmar displayed work conducted by herself and Andrew Lauer
on “Synthesis of Ten-Membered Enediynes with DNA Cleavage
Activity”. Accolades in the form of a Third Place Award in
the Physical Sciences were given to Shelley Stamper
and Adrian Bray for their research on “Synthesis
and Characteristics of Dehydroheteroarylannulene (DHA) Precursors”.
