Dr. Bullen received an early Christmas gift this year when she was notified that she had been awarded a Research Corporation Cottrell College Science Award. Dr. Bullen's project is aimed at assessing the role of siderophores (organic molecules produced by most bacteria that tightly bind to iron) in the initial stages of biofilm formation. Biofilms form when bacteria stick to surfaces. Examples of biofilms include plaque on teeth, films that clog pipes, and bacterial infections. Dr. Hazel Barton (Department of Biological Sciences) is collaborator on the project. The results of this work may provide important information about how metals might be protected from biofilms, such as medical inplants used in knee and hip replacements. The nearly $36,000 in funds will be used to provide salaries to undergraduate researchers and purchase supplies in support of the work. The project will run through 2009.
