Among the more than 300
research presentations in 18 different disciplines were seven from
the Northern Kentucky University Department of Chemistry. Dr. Paula
opened up
the chemistry oral presentations with his talk on "Virtual
screening for novel calcium ATPase inhibitors by computational
docking."
Chris Miller, from the
Russell Research Group, also gave an oral presentation. His presenation, "Synthesis
of Electron Rich Dehyrobenzoannulenes for Incorporation into Multi-Component
Devices," earned him first prize for the undergraduate research
oral presenation competition. In the microbiology division, Eric
Banks won first prize for his oral presentation, "The Potential
Role of Carbonic Anhydrase in the Precipitation of Calcite by Microbial
Metabolic Activity." Eric works jointly with Dr. Bullen and
Dr. Barton (Biological Sciences).
Four posters were also presented, Craig Girten (Walters research
group) presneted his work entitled, "Surface Modification
of G4 and G5 PAMAM Dendrimers." Jason Beck (Russell research
group) had a poster called, "Synthesis of Novel Asymmetric
14-Pyridoannulenes."
Kyla Evans (Paula reseach group), presented her work on "Preparation
of Proteoliposomes for the Study of Ion Transport by P-type ATPases
." Finally, Robert Ratliff (Paula group) showed his work on "Homology
modeling of a P5-type ATPase."
Next year's meeting will be held at the University of Kentucky.
